Q.  How often should I have my chimney swept?
A.  There isn't an exact answer.  There are different factors that
need to be considered, such as what the chimney is used for and
its frequency of use.  The National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA) standard 211 says, "Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall
be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from
deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and
repairs shall be done if necessary."
Q.  I don't have a fireplace, do I still need to have my chimney
inspected/swept?
A.  Absolutely.  Your chimney/heater flue should also follow the
NFPA standard 211 stated above.  Oil and gas fired appliances,
especially high efficiency models, can leave high levels of
condensation and acidic moisture in the flue, which can produce
corrosive deposits.  These deposits can cause deterioration of
the clay liner and brick work. Flues should be inspected for
soundness and freedom from deposits to ensure that the flue
gases, including carbon monoxide, are vented properly up the
chimney.
