Not all chimney contractors are the same! There are different individual
certifications and company memberships available. Who has what, and
what they mean can get very confusing.
Certifications. Some companies may employ one CSIA Certified Chimney
Sweep, others may have many. Some may have a FIRE Certified Chimney
Inspector on staff. Others may tell you a Certified Chimney Sweep is the
same as a Certified Chimney Inspector. There are also NFI Certified Wood,
Gas and Pellet specialists.
Some companies will employ one certified individual, but state “we are
certified”. All of the industry specific certifications (CSIA, Fire, NFI) are of
individuals only, not certification of companies.
Years of Experience. Some companies may tell you that they don’t need
certifications, because one or more employees may have “years of
experience”. Years of experience is important, but if someone hasn't
received training in years about code changes, safety practices, industry
standards, and new products, well knowing they haven't is important too!
Memberships. Others may say they are “members” of some organization,
when the only requirement to be a member is to pay a membership fee, and
experience or education is not required.
Registration/Licensing. All home improvement contractors working in the
state of NJ must be registered with the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs. A
license is issued with this registration, however, no training, education or
years of experience are necessary to be registered. Proof of insurance is the
main requirement.
